About two weeks ago I received a cold call from a recruiter.

He wanted to talk about the “New Year”, and how fast 2017 flew by. He stumbled over his words and immediately lost credibility. I couldn’t get him off the phone fast enough.

I thought this was the perfect time to give you my $0.02 on cold-calling.

When you are cold-calling or following up on a job with someone that you don’t have a solid relationship with, don’t beat around the bush. Don’t talk about how “great it is that it’s a NEW YEAR!” Or how “Happy you are that it's almost the weekend!”

The person you are calling doesn’t care and is probably way too busy for small talk.

Just jump RIGHT in, “Hi [First Name], my name is Brad and the reason I’m calling is….”

  • “…to follow up on...”
  • “…to see if you’re available…”
  • “…to find out if you're still interested in…"

Don’t waste a second of your prospect's time.

Jump right into the conversion. They will respect you for it.

Once you build a solid relationship the story is different. Until then, dive head first into the conversation.

It will pay off.
